Judicial Operations

Court Reporting Services

Court Reporters are licensed by the State of Illinois. The primary function of a court reporter is to make a verbatim record of all testimony in a court proceeding and, upon request, produce a written transcript of the proceedings. In an average day, a reporter may transcribe from 30,000 to 50,000 words. Additionally, court reporters frequently reference the record for judicial decision making and record keeping purposes. Court reporters also organize trial exhibits.

The reporter maintains and archives the electronic notes for future use, such as preparing transcripts for an appeal. Notes for criminal cases are kept indefinitely, whereas notes for civil cases are kept for seven years and may be destroyed thereafter.

Lake County currently employs 18 court reporters. In 2008, the court reporters prepared 44,433 pages of transcript for appeals and 35,243 pages of transcript for purposes other than appeal, resulting in a grand total of 79,676 transcribed pages.
