Programs offered to youth while in custody include Academics, Physical Education and Wellness, Spiritual Education Services, Gender Specific Services, Life Skills, Mental Health Services, Other Services, and the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative (JDAI).
- During 2008, the Detention Center implemented some computer-based learning projects and a more intensive homework hour to prepare residents for community transition. Math placements are now more individualized and report cards/progress reports are available for the court as well as other involved parties, such as parents and future schools.
- Also this year, the Vernon Public Library staff conducted a bi-weekly book club with the residents as an educational program that was partially funded by Oprah Winfrey’s “Angel Network.” The library has also assisted in obtaining two grants for the Detention Center and FACE-IT residential program, which will be used for the purchase of new books in the near future.
- Spiritual singing was added to spiritual services.
- Staff received training this year in effective residential program development for both the “Thinking for a Change” cognitive learning program and the “Motivational Interviewing” programs.
- In 2008, visiting professors from Ethiopia took a tour of the Detention Center.
