2008 Annual Report

Juvenile Probation & Detention

Highlights 2008

Juvenile Probation Officer Lori Sandquist received the Juvenile Justice Award from the Juvenile Officer’s Association. This award is presented to an individual who has significantly improved the lives of youth involved in the Juvenile Justice System and who has made great contributions towards the Juvenile Justice System of Lake County.

Senior Juvenile Counselor and Intake Officer, Patrick Maher received the Distinguished Service Award for his significant contributions to the Court, his colleagues, and the profession.

The Hulse Detention Center and the FACE-IT residential program were recipients of a $500.00 grant from the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation. This grant, in collaboration with the Vernon Area Library, will enable both programs to obtain new books for youth to read.

As part of a statewide initiative, the Juvenile Division was awarded a $10,000 Re-Deploy Illinois pre-planning grant through the Illinois Department of Human Services. The purpose of the grant was to examine risk factors that may precipitate commitment to the Department of Juvenile Justice and to assess the functionality of the current Juvenile programs. The study ran for a three year period and the grant money was used for training, meetings, and the compilation of relevant statistics. Results indicated that only the highest risk youth and most serious offenders received a disposition for commitment. Further, the system proved to be efficacious in exhausting all efforts to curb recidivism. The pre-planning grant process was deemed a valuable process, as it brought together team members from various areas of the juvenile court system to undertake some of the common problems statewide, including community safety and the incarceration of appropriate youth.
