Janice Byers is an Executive Secretary in the Adult DUI and Domestic Violence Unit. She was hired by Juvenile in April, 1982, for a temporary position and was rehired due to her skills in May of 1984, as a full-time secretary. She has moved upward through the Career Path program and also moved from Juvenile to Adult in April of 2001. She mainly works with and assists community treatment agencies, circuit clerks, state’s attorneys, public defenders, attorneys, law enforcement, court officials, and is usually the first person in probation that a new probationer sees. Janice assigns intakes and works with interpreters and their scheduling to ensure their effective use. Her energy, dependability, and enthusiasm are unsurpassed. Her flexibility, respect, and sensitivity to the probationers’ questions and needs go a long way to control even the most problematic individual. She has helped develop new forms and frequently helps probation officers during crisis situations, such as when the police are called on outstanding warrants. Her attention to detail, understanding of court orders, and accurate assignment of cases to specialized units exemplify probation’s philosophy to “utilize a problem solving, action-oriented, proactive, and professional approach” in working with the public. Janice lives in Waukegan.
The other nominee for this award in 2008 is Susan Anderson, Senior Secretary, Juvenile Probation.
The Exceptional Employee Award is named in honor of Kay S. Finn, Principal Adult Clerk, who was employed with the Circuit from July 29, 1985, to her death on April 16, 1999, and for Sarah G. Anderson, Executive Adult Secretary, who was employed with the Circuit from April 18, 1991 to her death on February 20, 2001.
