JANE D. WALLER

 

February 17, 1981 – November 30, 2008

 

Accolades to Jane D. Waller, Circuit Judge Retired, who served as a judge of the Lake County bench for almost three decades.

 

Judge Jane D. Waller was the first female judge in Lake County, Illinois. She was appointed Associate Judge in 1981 and appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court as Circuit Judge in 1996. She successfully retained the elected Circuit Judge position in the 1996 general election. She served as the first female Chief Judge of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit from December 1, 2000 to November 30, 2002. She also served as the first female President of the Lake County Bar Association. Most of her tenure as Circuit Judge has been Presiding Judge of the Family Division.

 

Highlights during Judge Waller's judicial career include the creation of Kids' Korner in the courthouse, a waiting room for children while parents or guardians conduct court business. She has received several awards, among those, the Fred L. Foreman Criminal Justice Award in 1994; the Samuel Berger Award in 1994 from the Chicago Chapter of the Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys; and, in 2000, she was honored by the Child Care Coalition of Lake County.

 

Jane Waller is a lifelong resident of Waukegan, Illinois. She received her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She holds a Masters in Teaching degree from Northwestern University and a Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Illinois College of Law. She is a member of the Illinois State and Lake County Bar Associations, the Illinois Judges Association, and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts.
