Construction Detours & Updates
|The construction of the Criminal Courts Tower is underway. This will result in street closures and changes in access to the main Courthouse located at 18 N County Street, Waukegan.|
Washington Street entrance (Near Construction Site)
Beginning Monday, May 2, the walkway connecting the Main Courthouse and Babcox Justice Center was closed to allow for major work on the bridge.
The section of the bridge directly south of Washington Street has been demolished. The other portion (over Washington Street) will undergo a makeover that includes removing the roofing, brick and windows, and transforming the appearance of the bridge’s interior. The bridge will be closed for approximately two years.
The Washington Street entrance is open during the construction. Be aware that the walkways to the entrance doors may change as construction progresses. The recent bridge closing means employees and the public will have to walk outside along Washington Street, or County Street, from the main entrance to Babcox Courtrooms (C120 (Bond Court), C150, C220 and C221). This is approximately 1000 feet in distance or about a three minute walk. The sidewalk allow Washington Street is complete connecting to County Street. Be cautious, Washington Street has been partially reopened to through traffic.
Motorists should pay attention to detour signs. Detour information and a map is available on the project website.
Metered street parking along County Street in front of the Babcox Justice Center and the Public Defender's Office will no longer be available. Metered parking is still available on County Street north of Washington Street and south of Water Street. The County Parking garage is also available on the north end of the County building.
The Courthouse Expansion project includes:

- Remodeling of the Babcox Justice Center: Remodeling of the courts, jail intake and booking and jail kitchen areas located within the Babcox Justice Center totaling approximately 45,000 sq ft. Construction anticipated to begin in 2017.
